Lumpy skin disease a viral infection are rapidly spreading among the cows and buffaloes of the India. In a state of Gujarat and Rajsthan approximately 3000 cattles died due this viral infection.

The first case of Lumpy Skin Disease was detected in 2019 in Orissa. Currently Lumpy Virus are spread in Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Gujarat , Rajsthan and Andaman&Nicobar. It was previously restricted in the eatern zone but rapidly spread in the western zone of India.

What is Lumpy Skin Disease? Mode of Transmission & Symptoms –

According to the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI) reports Lumpy Skin Disease is caused by virus Capripoxvirus,which spread Lumpy viral infection in cattles and  buffaloes.

This virus is genetically related to goatpox virus and sheeppox virus.

Mode of Transmission –

Lumpy Skin Disease transmit in the cattles through house flies, horse flies and blood sucking insects like mosquitoes.

Symptoms –

Followings are the symptoms of Lumpy Skin Disease -:

  • Viral infection first initiated with the fever in the cows and buffaloes
  • Loss of appetite and weight loss
  • Development of the lesions in the mouth
  • Appearance of the nodules or lumps on the skin
  • Reduce milk production
  • Excessive nasal and salivary secretion
  • Preganan cattles also suffer from miscarriage
  • In some cases some the cattles with poor immune sysytem die


Preventive measures to protect against the Lumpy Virus –

According to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) cattle owners should take preventive steps as soons as they detected infections in their cattles.

Preventive Measures-

  • The moment you detected the infection on your cattles, you should immediately isolate your cattle from the healthy ones
  • Sanitise the whole cattle- sheds by spraying insecticides and disinfectant chemicals
  • Report the outbreaks of the Lumpy Virus infection to the state govt. so the healhty cattles get vaccinated early using goat pox vaccine by the govt.
  • Provide treatment to the infected cattles from your nearst veterinary
  • Carefully dispose the dead cattles by burning

Indian Council for Agriculture Research (ICAR) develops Vaccines for Lumpy Skin Disease in Cattle –

It is one of the important discovery in the Indian veterinary fields. Two institutes of ICAR develops the vaccines against the;umpy Virus Disease.

ICAR – National Research Centres on Equines (ICAR-NRCE),Hisar(Haryana) collaborated with ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute(ICAR-IVRI),Izatnagar (UP) developed a vaccine name –  “Lumpi-Pro VacInd”

According to ICAR vaccines is safe after successful trials against experimental and field cattles, that includes pregnant and lactating one.

B.N.Tripathi,Deputy Director General (Animal Science),ICAR said the two institutes can produce 2.5 lakh dosage/month.

"The cost per dose is ₹1-2," and the immunity induced by homologous live attenuated LSD vaccines usually persists for a minimum period of one year.

Important Question –

1) Is there any chance that Lumpy Virus can spread into humans from infected cattles?

Ans. No, according to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), the disease is not zoonotic, means it dosen’t spread from animals to humans.
